San Francisco’s Salesforce Tower Opens for Business

San Francisco's Salesforce Tower officially opened on January 15, and the building received a welcome befitting of its new residence: gray skies, fog, and intermittent rainfall.

At 1,070 feet (326 meters) tall, the Salesforce behemoth is the second-tallest building west of the Mississippi River. The whole of San Francisco unfolds around it for those who to dare ascend the building's 61 floors to its glass apex.

The Salesforce Tower has been much discussed since the sloping steel building first began rising – and rising and rising – out of the Financial District. But the majority of public discussion has revolved around the façade of the hulking building and, naturally, its disruption of the San Francisco skyline.

But on a day such as this one, the conversation was not outward-focused, but inward. New tenants finally got to step inside their new digs, and it didn't matter so much that those across the Bay failed to see lights flicker on inside the building.

Many took to social media to celebrate the occasion, including Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff himself. He shared a photo of some of the building's newest residents, captioned: "Here they are: The first occupants of Salesforce Tower. Very historic. They are receiving their orientation on an amazing workplace. May they do well and do good!"
